ย้อนกลับไปปี 2001 หรือปี 2542 ในพุทธศักราช ชายคนหนึ่งได้สร้างโค้ด PHP ขึ้นมาตัวหนึ่ง แล้วตั้งชื่อว่า b2 จากนั้นก็ปล่อยโค้ดตัวนี้ให้ชาวบ้านชาวช่องได้ดาวน์โหลดไปใช้งานกัน
หน้าที่ของโค้ดตัวนี้คือ ไว้ใช้สำหรับเขียนไดอารี่ เป็นที่นิยมของชนชาวเว็บกลุ่มหนึ่ง เขาก็ได้ตั้งชุมชนกันขึ้นมาเพื่อเป็นที่แลกเปลี่ยนความรู้เกี่ยวกับโค้ดตัวนี้ คนที่พัฒนา b2 ก็ทำการพัฒนาตัวโปรแกรมของตัวเองออกมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง
จนผ่านไปจะเข้าปลายปี 2002 (2543) คนในชุมชนสังเกตเห็นว่าเจ้าของโปรแกรมไม่ได้เคลื่อนไหวโปรแกรมของตัวเองมาพักหนึ่งแล้ว และหายหน้าหายตาไป ความกังวลจึงเกิดขึ้นแก่บรรดาเหล่าสาวก เกรงว่าโปรแกรมอันเป็นที่นิยมชื่นชอบของตัวเอง จะตายไปจากโลกนี้
ในซอกหลีบบางรัฐของอเมริกา ชายหนุ่มคนหนึ่ง สาวกตัวยงของ b2 ก็รู้สึกกังวลใจในเหตุการณ์ครั้งนี้เหมื่อนกัน เขาจึงคว้าคอมตัวเก่งของเขา พร้อมด้วยโค้ด b2 มาเขียนโปรแกรมต่อเติมเพิ่มเข้าไป ยื้อชีวิต b2
เสร็จแล้วก็ส่งโปรแกรมที่มี b2 เป็นฐานนี้เข้าสู่ชมชุมแห่งนั้น
ชายหนุ่มคนนี้ชื่อ Matt Mullenweg ถ้าเป็นภาษาไทยน่าจะอ่านว่า แมท มัลเลนเว็ก มั้ง นามสกุลพี่แกฟังแปลกๆ ไม่รู้เป็นญาติข้างไหนกับนาซีบ้างหรือเปล่า
และแล้วเพื่อนของนายแมทชื่อ Christine Selleck คริสเตียน เซลเล็ค ก็แนะนำว่า โปรแกรมนายควรจะชื่อว่า WordPress
27 พฤกษภาคม 2544 (2003) เวิร์ดเพรสเวอร์ชั่น 0.70 ถูกประกาศอย่างเป็นทางการ เป็นเวอร์ชั่นแรกของเวิร์ดเพรส เป็นวันถือกำเนิดของเวิร์ดเพรส
จนมาถึงปัจจุบันปี 2551 เวิร์ดเพรสถูกดาวน์โหลดไปใช้งานแล้วไม่ต่ำกว่า 12.5 ล้านครั้ง มีเว็บที่ใช้เวิร์ดเพรสออนไลน์อยู่ในปัจจุบันทั้งโลก ไม่ต่ำกว่า 1 ล้านเว็บไซต์
